Haven't tried making the pleated front dress but looks like it works well with a gathered neckline - similar to one of the dresses in Happy Homemade Sew Chic. Great fabric choice for the second dress (your son has a good eye). This is one of my favourite patterns from the Stylish Dress Book series.
